The Mystic Press of the town of Mystic, CT, ran a series in 1896 about
the local inhabitants who were of royal descent. This is one from the series, and it has
reappeared fairly often here and there. Exactly where the newspaper found the information
is not known but presumable it came from the descendants themselves as it is unlikely that
the newspaper was doing any genealogical research. While the Lake family of New London
County had long claimed they were of royal descent, this particular royal line has since
been refuted for lack of evidence that the Lakes of Essexshire were in any way connected
with the Lakes of Erby. Of course, this does not mean it is untrue. It means only that the
community of professional genealogists does not take it seriously.
