The Mayflower Ancestry of Lynn Winfield Gallup
(Well, one is not exactly a descendant of the Mayflower - It was a ship, you know. )

Mayflower.jpg (42209 bytes)

I was a few years into this genealogy project when I found a family genealogy giving a line of descent from Pilgrim John Howland down to Jonathan Macy and Lois Gorham. Though it then branched off through their son Barnabas, it gave the birth date of their son Samuel. I was surprised to note that it was the same birth date as for a Samuel Macy I had already determined was a 2nd great grandfather of my dad. The reference given for this was John Howland of the Mayflower - The First Five Generations by Elizabeth Pearson White. I had seen references to this book before but never so closely connected to my line. The thought that the line of my father might be a Mayflower line was more than a little exciting so I ordered a copy of the book. While awaiting delivery I scooted about the internet and learned that Madam White was a past president of the Mayflower Society of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and her book was considered THE authority on the descendancy of Pilgrim John Howland.
The White book is a wonderful piece of work but it does not go beyond this Samuel, son of Jonathan and Lois, not even so far as mentioning a marriage for him. Further searching led me to one of the "look-up volunteers" on the internet, those kind folks who offer to search references which they happen to own. He told me that he had found a reference to Henry Dingman, Dad's great grandfather, in the vital statistics of Nantucket, so I bought a copy of the statistics on CD-ROM - And there it was, births, deaths, marriages, children, the whole works. It documented Samuel's marriage to Lydia Folger and their daughter Rebecca, my dad's great grandmother. The records named Rebecca's husband, Henry Dingman, and all their children including Eliza, Dad's grandmother. All this in spite of the fact that Rebecca had left the Island and married Henry in New York state. Thankfully, those old Nantucket Quakers just didn't let go of their people easily.
Now, so I figured, I would simply send all my stuff to The Mayflower Society, get my certificate and that would be that. Ha! No way. Sure, White's book was good enough for them and so were Nantucket's vital records, but the mere fact that I had found a bunch of secondary references from Eliza's marriage on down to me just didn't impress the Society very much at all - They were genealogical pros and my standards didn't cut it with them.
It was almost two years before I had acquired primary sources for the births, marriages and deaths of the people involved. I just kept feeding them to the Society as I found them and one day I received in the mail a very nice looking document stating that I was certified Mayflower Descendant number 68,924.
Just as it was not necessary for me to re-prove the information in E.P. White's book, it is now no longer necessary for a descendant who wishes to be officially designated a  "Mayflower Descendant" to prove more than their connection into any generation of the same line as mine; it is now considered a proven line by the Society.
